Benagil is a small Portuguese village on the Atlantic coast in the municipality of Lagoa, Algarve, in Portugal.

Up to the late 20th century, the village's economy was based on ocean fishing, but it developed into a tourist area with a widely used beach, Praia de Benagil.  It has few inhabitants but in the summer many people come from abroad. The population is roughly 60. Benagil village and beach are located close to the internationally famous Marinha Beach.

The main tourist attraction in Benagil is Benagil Cave (Portuguese: Algar de Benagil). Out of all sea caves that dot the Algarve coastline between Lagos and Albufeira, the Benagil Cave is the only one that has been eroded both from the side and from the top. This unique natural process has resulted in an opening in the ceiling that allows the sunlight to brighten up the grotto and the beach that it hides.

In 2023, after concerns of overtourism was raised, canoeskayaks and surfboards are banned  and there have been some proposals to set up limits and admission fee for tourists.

Had your fill of all that sunshine on the Algarve coast? From the beach at Benagil you can hire a boat, pilot your own kayak, or—if you're really adventurous—swim out to the fantastic sea caves carved into the rocks just offshore. The Atlantic Ocean has been working on the architecture here for a very long time indeed. Visitors to this exquisitely rugged part of the Portuguese coastline are treated to surreally textured rock stacks, weathered pinnacles, and cavernous limestone 'rooms' carpeted by soft sand and surrounded by turquoise waters.

Why is the Benagil Cave closed?

Starting September 10, 2023, the Portuguese government put restrictions in place to limit how visitors can access the cave. This comes after an extremely busy summer and with multiple boat tours, kayak tours, and people swimming to the cave, there were several incidents putting visitors in danger.10 Oct 2024
