In a significant military engagement, Ukrainian Air Force fighter jets executed a major airstrike on a Russian military base located in the Kursk region in mid-February 2025. Subsequent to the strike, video footage was publicly disseminated, showcasing the details of the incident.

On February 14th, the Ukrainian General Staff posted the video footage on its Facebook page and also provided some key details about the successful air strike and what the attack accomplished.

The Ukrainian General Staff reported the strike took place on February 13th and that it targeted a Russian military stronghold located near the village of Elizavetovka in Kursk. 

 

Used against Ukrainian forces

Soldiers from Russia’s 28th Infantry Battalion—which is attached to the 60th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade—were using the base in Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. 

 

The base was launching drones

According to the Ukrainian General Staff’s report, the soldiers stationed at the Russian base were using it to launch drone attacks against targets in the Sumy region. 

 

Degrading Russian capabilities

The General Staff said the strike was “part of a systematic effort by the Armed Forces of Ukraine aimed at neutralizing threats and weakening the enemy’s military capabilities.”

A short video clip

The 26-second clip doesn't include many details, but it shows the Russian base before it was hit with a bomb from Ukrainian aviation and the resulting explosion from the strike.

No details were provided about what type of fighter jet was used in the air strike nor the type of bomb used. However, some news outlets have guessed at what was used.

Was a powerful US bomb used?

The Ukrainian military website Militarnyi reported a 1000-pound Mark 83 (460 kg) bomb could have been used based on its analysis of the explosion in the footage released.

What is the Mark 83?

Militarnyi reported that the 1000-pound Mark 83 is an older bomb that has been adapted with the American JDAM-ER guidance kit, turning it into a precision-guided bomb. 

 

Another air strike video

The Aviationist noted Ukraine became the first nation to use a Mark 83 with a JDAM-ER at the beginning of February 2025 after a video of the bomb being used emerged online.

Attached to an Su-27 Flanker

A 1000-pound Mark 83 was dropped by a Ukrainian Su-27 Flanker on a Russian position. The video was first published on Facebook by Ukraine’s 39th Tactical Aviation Brigade.
