One of the most elegant waterfalls in Iceland is

Svartifoss - the Black waterfall - the Pearl of Skaftafell.

Svartifoss Waterfall - South Iceland

Svartifoss (Black Falls). Ice-cold meltwater from Svínafellsjökull glacier feeds the famous Svartifoss waterfall. The waterfall tumbles down 20 metres (80 ft) over a cliff, which is bordered on both sides by tall black basalt columns. It resembles pipes of a giant organ, which is where the waterfall gets its name.

The green and lush Skaftafell appears nestled between massive white glacier tongues on both sides.

Prominent in this area is also the massive glacial icefall Öræfajökull.

It is Iceland’s tallest mountain at 2,110 meters (6,922 ft) – the highest summit of which is called Hvannadalshnúkur.

Glaciers dominate this area

This subglacial volcano is Iceland’s biggest active volcano and reputedly Europe’s second-biggest of its type right after Mt. Etna on Sicily.

The hexagonal basalt columns are not totally black, they have many different colors, but some of them have got a black hue.

Basalt columns at Skaftafell

Iceland’s State Architect Guðjón Samúelsson is believed to have been inspired by the hexagonal basalt columns when he designed the ceiling in the National Theater of Iceland.

Aurora Borealis: One of Iceland's Top Attractions

The Northern Lights are an unusual and unique phenomenon.

The Icelandic weather is not very favorable nor mild; we have constant rain and severe winds.

Therefore we got the hypnotizing northern lights as a reward and compensation.

The most well known Icelandic mountain with the aurora borealis in the sky is

the Kirkjufell mountain on the Snaefellsnes peninsula.
