Two countries make up the coastline of the Riviera

There was only one Riviera,

stretching from Marseille in France all the way to the Italian city of La Spezia. 

Riviera (pronounced [riˈvjɛːra]) is an Italian word which means 'coastline',  ultimately derived from Latin rīpa, through Ligurian rivêa.  It came to be applied as a proper name to the coast of Liguria, in the form Riviera ligure, then shortened in English. Riviera

Riviera, Mediterranean coastland between Cannes (France) and La Spezia (Italy). The French section comprises part of the Côte d'Azur (which extends farther west), while the Italian section is known to the west and east of Genoa as the Riviera di Ponente and the Riviera di Levante, respectively.

 

Sheltered to the north by the Maritime Alps and Ligurian Apennines, the district has exceptionally mild winters and brilliant, hot summers, with much sunshine throughout the year. Rain falls on only about 60 days a year, and the coast rarely has snow.

 

Many delicate plants flourish, including the pomegranate, agave, mimosa, and some types of palms. Flowers are grown out of season in large quantities for export to northern markets. The favourable climate, the grandeur of the rugged coastal scenery, and the attractions of the sea have long drawn the leisured rich, especially during winter. The resident population is extremely dense and is increased by the tourists.

The Palais des Festivals et des Congrès (Palace of Festivals and Conferences) is a convention centre in Cannes, France. It is the primary venue for the annual Cannes Film Festival, the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, MIPIM, and the NRJ Music Awards. The second building was unveiled in 1982.

Cannes (/kæn, kɑːn/, KA(H)N; French: [kan] ⓘ, locally [ˈkanə]; Occitan: Canas) is a city located on the French Riviera. It is a commune located in the Alpes-Maritimes department, and host city of the annual Cannes Film Festival, Midem, and Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The city is known for its association with the rich and famous, its luxury hotels and restaurants, and for several conferences.

La Spezia is the second-largest city in the Liguria region, after Genoa. 

 

The Italian Riviera of Ponente

The Riviera's centre is Genoa, which divides it into two main sections: the Riviera di Ponente ("the coast of the setting sun"), extending westwards from Genoa to the French border; and the Riviera di Levante ("the coast of the rising sun") between Genoa and Capo Corvo.

Genoa (/ˈdʒɛnoʊə/ JEN-oh-ə; Italian: Genova [ˈdʒɛːnova] ⓘ; Ligurian: Zêna [ˈzeːna])[a] is a city in and the capital of the Italian region of Liguria, and the sixth-largest city in Italy. In 2023, 558,745 people lived within the city's administrative limits.  While its metropolitan city has 813,626 inhabitants, more than 1.5 million people live in the wider metropolitan area stretching along the Italian Riviera.

The Maritime Alps (French: Alpes Maritimes [alp maʁitim]; Italian: Alpi Marittime [ˈalpi maˈrittime]) are a mountain range in the southwestern part of the Alps. They form the border between the French region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and the Italian regions of Piedmont and Liguria. They are the southernmost part of the Alps.

The French Riviera, known in French as the Côte d'Azur (pronounced [kot dazyʁ] ⓘ; Provençal: Còsta d'Azur, pronounced [ˈkwɔstɔ daˈzyʀ]; lit. 'Azure Coast'), is the Mediterranean coastline of the southeast corner of France.

프랑스 구역은 코트다쥐르의 일부로 되어 있고(코트다쥐르 자체는 더 서쪽까지 연장됨), 이탈리아 구역은 제노바를 경계로 서쪽은 리비에라데포넨테로, 동쪽은 리비에라디레반테로 알려져 있다. 북쪽은 마리팀알프스와 아펜니노리구레가 막고 있으며, 1년내내 햇볕이 많아 겨울은 이례적으로 온화하고 여름은 쾌청하며 더운 편이다. 비오는 날이 1년에 60일 정도밖에 없고 해안에는 눈이 거의 오지 않는다.

석류나무·용설란·미모사와 여러 품종의 야자나무 등 우아한 식물들이 많이 자라고 있다. 이곳에서는 계절에 관계없이 꽃을 대량으로 재배하여 북쪽에 있는 여러 시장으로 출하한다. 기후가 온화하고 바위투성이의 해안 경치가 장관을 이루며 바다가 아름다워서 오래전부터 겨울철 여가를 즐기는 부유층이 찾고 있다. 상주인구가 아주 많은데 관광객들로 인해 그 밀도가 더 높아지고 있다.

 

칸의 인기는 1834년 브로엄 경이 콜레라가 만연하던 니스 대신 이곳에 머무른 이후, 30년 동안 해마다 다시 찾아와 하나의 유행을 만들어냄으로써 비롯되었다. 현대에 들어와 운송수단이 발달하면서 이곳을 찾는 관광객들이 많아졌고 보다 인기있는 여러 가지 휴양시설과 함께 호화로운 별장과 호텔들이 들어섰다. 작은 모나코 공국에 있는 몬테카를로는 호사스런 생활을 즐기는 사람들이 많이 모이는 곳이다.

 

서쪽에서 동쪽에 이르기까지 해안 도심지로 개발된 주요중심지는 프랑스의 칸·쥐앙레팽·앙티브·니스·망통, 이탈리아의 보르디게라·산레모·알라시오·산타마르게리타·라팔로·세스트리레반테·레반토 등이다. 리비에라는 땅투기와 사유재산권 때문에 공공의 이익을 위한 개발계획이나 개발제한이 큰 어려움을 겪고 있다. 전망 좋은 낭떠러지를 옆에 끼고 있는 3층의 자동차도로(코르니슈)가 니스에서부터 망통에 있는 이탈리아 국경까지 나 있다. 그중 가장 높은 곳에 있는 도로는 프랑스 황제인 나폴레옹 1세가 로마 대로를 대신해서 건설했다. 그랑드 코르니슈라고 부르는 이 도로는 경치가 아름다운 라튀르비 마을을 지나며 427m 이상 되는 높이에 있어 모나코가 내려다보인다. 가장 낮은 곳에 있는 코르니슈는 19세기에 모나코 대공이 건설한 것으로 해안의 여러 휴양지들과 연결되어 있다. 1939년에 개통된 가운데 도로는 관광산업의 목적과 더불어, 높은 곳에 자리잡은 에즈 마을과 연결하기 위해 건설되었다. 돌출해 있는 석회암 지대의 여러 터널을 지나는 철도가 하나 있다.→ 코트다쥐르
