Military aid is back on the table

On March 11th, representatives from the United States and Ukraine reached a stunning new agreement that could finally bring an end to the conflict in the country. What was agreed upon? Let’s take a look at what each side has said.

A drawn out negotiation

According to the Washington Post, the agreement resulted from more than eight hours of negotiations between American and Ukrainian officials, after which two major pieces of policy were agreed upon—both of which were critical developments.

Resolving differences

First, the United States has agreed to lift its pause on military assistance to Ukraine that went into effect after the disastrous Oval Office argument between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on February 28th.

Kyiv supports Trump’s vision

“The Ukrainian delegation today made something very clear, that they share President Trump’s vision for peace,” said White House National Security Advisor Mike Waltz following the meeting, which took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Ending the fighting is critical

Waltz added that the Ukrainians shared President Trump’s determination to "put an end to the fighting, to end the killing, to end the tragic meat grinder of people.” In exchange for the resumption of military aid, Ukraine agreed is something profound.

A meeting in Saudi Arabia

The Washington Post reported that Ukrainian officials went into the meeting in Jeddah offering a limited ceasefire that would ban both Russia and Ukraine from launching air and sea-based long-range attacks. However, the US negotiations wanted more.

Ukraine had previously been reluctant to agree to an immediate and full ceasefire of the conflict without security guarantees for fear that Russian President Vladimir Putin would just violate the ceasefire, something that Putin has done in the past.

Despite Ukrainian concerns, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio allegedly made it clear that the United States wanted Ukraine to agree to a 30-day ceasefire that would govern the entire conflict, including the fighting on the frontlines.

The shooting has to stop

“You have to stop shooting at each other and that’s what the president has wanted to see, and that’s the commitment we got today from the Ukrainian side,” Rubio remarked during a press conference following the negotiations.

It’s Russia’s move now

“We’ll take this offer now to the Russians. We hope the Russians will reciprocate,” the Secretary of State added, indicating that the onus of responsibility for the ceasefire now laid with Russia and Putin. It is unclear if Putin will agree to the ceasefire deal.

The Ukrainian government issued a statement that noted the negotiations also covered the release of prisoners of war and civilian detainees, as well as the return of Ukrainian children who were forcibly moved to Russia from Ukraine.

What about the mineral rights deal?

Ukraine’s statement also noted that its delegation reiterated that the country’s European partners should be involved in the peace process. Both delegations also agreed to work on a possible framework for developing Ukraine’s mineral resources.
