Some leaders aren't holding back their opinions on Trump
Donald Trump’s reelection has significantly impacted global diplomacy, strengthening ties with rivals such as Russia while straining long-standing alliances with partners like Canada and the EU. While many leaders have adopted a measured response, others have openly criticized the administration, unabashedly taking jabs at its policies.
Trudeau calls Trump’s trade war “dumb”
Shortly after the US imposed a 25% import tax on Canadian goods, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau didn’t hold back: “Donald, it’s not in my habit to agree with the Wall Street Journal, but they point out that even though you’re a very smart guy, this is a very dumb thing to do.”
“We’re probably gonna keep booing the American anthem”
“Canadians are hurt, Canadians are angry,” Trudeau said in response to the tariffs. “We’re gonna choose to not go on vacation in Florida … or wherever. We’re gonna choose to try to buy Canadian products and forego bourbon and other classic American products. And yeah, we’re probably gonna keep booing the American anthem.” He clarified that the boos weren’t aimed at Americans themselves but at “a policy designed to hurt us.”
Trump’s “indecency” endangers transatlantic alliance, says French PM
While French President Emmanuel Macron has played nice with “Dear Donald,” his prime minister was more direct. In March, François Bayrou called Trump’s attitude toward Ukraine “an indecency” and described the Oval Office meeting with Trump, Zelensky, and JD Vance as “marked by brutality and a desire to humiliate.”
Trump is an emperor, Musk is his ketamine-fueled jester
French Senator Claude Malhuret delivered a scathing 8-minute speech, saying, “Washington has become the court of Nero — a fiery emperor, submissive courtiers, and a ketamine-fueled jester in charge of purging the civil service,” referring to Donald Trump and Elon Musk. He also called Trump’s presidency a “tragedy for the free world.”
A French politician’s brutal take on Trump goes viral
Former French president declares US "no longer an ally"
Former French President François Hollande remarked that, while the American people remain friends, the Trump administration itself "is no longer our ally; he is consorting with our adversaries," suggesting a potential "divorce" between Europe and the US in the near future.
Ex-Polish president, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate calls Musk"a man who means nothing"
Poland’s legendary anti-communist leader, former president and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Lech Walesa weighed into tensions between Polish and US leaders around Starlink. “Let's do our own thing, let's create European security and strong alliances here, in Europe, let's not deal with and worry about Musk. I don't worry about him … he should be avoided … he is a man who means nothing," he told the Polish tabloid Super Express.
Zelensky: “You have nice ocean and don’t feel now. But you will feel it in the future.”
While this may not seem like a huge insult, the Ukrainian president’s comment during the infamous Oval Office meeting triggered an angry outburst from Trump. “You don’t know that. Don’t tell us what we’re going to feel … We are going to feel very good and very strong … You’re not in a good position. You don’t have the cards right now,” retorted the US president.
“Thank you America, thank you for your support, thank you for this visit”
After the meeting, Zelensky posted this message on X, seemingly in an ironic tone, after Vice President JD Vance lectured him on showing more gratitude as they berated him before abruptly ending his visit.
“The free world needs a new leader,” says EU foreign policy chief
After the tense Oval Office meeting with Zelensky, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas posted on social media: “Ukraine is Europe! We stand by Ukraine. We will step up our support to Ukraine so that they can continue to fight back the aggressor. Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It’s up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge.”
German leader: Trump-Zelensky clash was a “deliberate escalation”
Germany’s likely next chancellor, Friedrich Merz, suggested that the heated Oval Office meeting was intentional. “In my opinion, it was not a spontaneous reaction to what Zelensky was saying, but obviously a deliberate escalation in this meeting,” he told German media.
Calling Zelensky a dictator is “wrong and dangerous”
Before his electoral defeat, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz criticized Trump for labeling Zelensky a dictator. “It is simply wrong and dangerous to deny President Zelensky his democratic legitimacy,” Scholz told Der Spiegel. He also called Trump’s Gaza plan “a scandal.”
Spain’s prime minister calls Trump’s Gaza plan “immoral”
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez condemned Trump’s suggestion to relocate Palestinians and turn Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East.” “No real estate operation can cover up the disgrace, the crimes against humanity… from Spain, we will not allow it,” he said.
UK politicians slam Vance’s “foolish and insulting” remark
After US Vice President JD Vance seemed to dismiss a proposed UK-France peacekeeping mission in Ukraine as coming from “some random country that has not fought a war in 30 years,” British politicians lashed out. Former Defense Secretary James Cleverly called it a “foolish and insulting, throwaway remark,” especially given the UK’s support for the US after 9/11.
The Pope rebukes US over deportations
Pope Francis criticized Trump’s pledge of mass deportations, calling it “a major crisis” that “damages the dignity of many men and women, and of entire families.” He urged the administration to reflect on the parable of the Good Samaritan.
Proving Vance’s Catholic theology wrong
Vance, a devout Catholic, defended US policies by arguing that Christian love starts with family, then neighbors, and only later extends to the rest of the world. The Pope pushed back, writing, “Christian love is not a concentric expansion of interests that little by little extend to other persons and groups,” emphasizing that love should be universal.
Greenland: “We do not want to be Americans”
After Trump threatened that the US would take Greenland “one way or another,” Greenland's now outgoing Prime Minister Múte B. Egede responded bluntly: “We do not want to be Americans, nor Danes. We are Kalaallit (Greenlanders). The Americans and their leader must understand that.”
China: America backs “law of the jungle,” has “two-faced policies”
China may not be an ally, but it also warned against Trump’s foreign policy. “Should everyone stress ‘my country first’ and obsess over a position of strength, the law of the jungle would reign again,” said Foreign Minister Wang Yi. He also criticized the US for its “two-faced policies” on China.
