Quenya  and  Sindarin

 

Tolkien was interested in languages from an early age, and developed several constructed languages while still a teen. Eventually, as a young adult, he created an entire family of constructed languages spoken by Elves and a secondary world where these could evolve.

 

One of these languages was created in around 1915, inspired by the Celtic languages, particularly Literary Welsh. Tolkien called it Goldogrin or "Gnomish" in English. He wrote a substantial dictionary of Gnomish and a grammar.

 

Quenya

Quenya is an artificial language developed by the English philologist & author of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, etc., J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973). The native language of the High Elves, Quenya was inspired by Finnish, Latin, Greek & some smaller elements from other European languages.

 

Quenya (pronounced [ˈkʷwɛɲja]) is a constructed language, one of those devised by J. R. R. Tolkien for the Elves in his Middle-earth fiction.

 

Tolkien began devising the language around 1910, and restructured its grammar several times until it reached its final state. The vocabulary remained relatively stable throughout the creation process. He successively changed the language's name from Elfin and Qenya to the eventual Quenya. Finnish had been a major source of inspiration, but Tolkien was also fluent in Latin and Old English, and was familiar with Greek, Welsh (the latter being the primary inspiration for Sindarin, Tolkien's other major Elvish language), and other ancient Germanic languages, particularly Gothic, during his development of Quenya.

 

Within Tolkien's legendarium, Quenya is one of the many Elvish languages spoken by the immortal Elves, called Quendi ('speakers') in Quenya.

 

Sindarin

Tolkien created Sindarin in around 1944.

Sindarin is one of the constructed languages devised by J. R. R. Tolkien for use in his fantasy stories set in Arda, primarily in Middle-earth. Sindarin is one of the many languages spoken by the Elves. The word Sindarin is a Quenya word.

 

존 로널드 로얼 톨킨(John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, J. R. R. 톨킨, /ˈruːl ˈtɒlkiːn/, CBE, 1892년 1월 3일~1973년 9월 2일)은 영국의 영어학 교수, 언어학자이자 작가이다. 그는 옥스퍼드 대학교 펨브룩 칼리지에서 1925년부터 1945년까지 고대영어학 교수로, 1945년에서 1959년 사이에는 같은 대학 머튼 칼리지의 영어영문학 교수로 재직했다.

그는 평생 써 온 소설을 통해 인생 후반에 큰 명성을 얻었는데, 이것에는 《반지의 제왕》과 《호빗》 등의 가운데땅 관련 세계관 책이 있다. 톨킨은 옥스퍼드 영어사전 편찬과 관련한 일을 하기도 했으며, 언어학 교수로도 재직했다. 톨킨은 언어학에 대해 관심이 많아서 그의 작품 내에 인공적인 언어를 만들어 사용하기도 하였는데, 그러한 언어들 중, 퀘냐와 신다린 등이 대표적이다.

"Sindarin (Grey-elven) is properly the name of the languages of the Elvish inhabitants of Beleriand, the later almost drowned land west of the Blue Mountains.

Quenya was the language of the Exiled High-Elves returning to Middle-earth. The Exiles, being relatively few in number, eventually adopted a form of Sindarin: a southern dialect (of which the purest and most archaic variety was used in Doriath ruled by Thingol). This they used in daily speech, and even adapted their own personal names to its form.

 

But the Sindarin of the High-elves was (naturally) somewhat affected by Quenya, and contained some Quenya elements. Sindarin is also loosely applied to the related languages of the Elves of the same origin as the Grey Elves of Beleriand, who lived in Eriador and further East."

 

Sindarin and Quenya are different Elvish languages

 

Quenya is the high elven speech of the West.

Quenya is the High Speech of the Valinorean elves. 

Quenya is what’s known as a “High Elvish” language, meaning that it was spoken by the elves who lived in Valinor, the Western Paradise.

 

Sindarin is spoken by elves who remained in Middle-earth.

Sindarin is sort of the 'lower' form of Quenya used by the Grey Elves that didn't leave Middle-Earth to go to Valinor.

Sindarin,  was spoken by the elves who remained in Middle Earth after being exiled from Valinor.
