 “Merikia Tunnel”

It is a part of tunnels around Lakki and there was the maritime administration of Italians, who remained in Leros for 31 years (1912- 1943). During the Second World War, the Germans tried to recapture Leros due to its strategic and geographical location and they literally bombarded it for 52 days and they finally conquered it.

Windmill on the island of Leros, Greece

Asked to picture a windmill, most folks' minds will conjure up images from the plains of Holland or the writings of Cervantes. Windmills probably originated in ancient Persia, spreading across Asia well before they reached Europe. The example in our photo lies in between, situated on a European island just a few short miles from Asia. Leros is part of the Dodecanese chain of islands, which hugs the Turkish coast but is a part of Greece. It's one of many Greek isles that feature traditional medieval windmills: painted stone cylinders with conical roofs and thin-spoked sails. Built to pump water and grind grain, many of them can now be rented as vacation homes.

Leros Traditional Windmills

The Windmills of Leros Dodecanese, Greece: Although the function of windmills today is not the same as when they were originally created, they still are characteristic constructions of Leros island that attract the interest of visitors. In the past times, they were used to convert the energy of the wind into more useful forms, with the use of their rotating blades.

In general, their most common use was to grind the grain and many of them can be found in disuse along the rest of the Greek islands. However, in the case of Leros, the windmills were conserved as constructions and in many cases, they have been restored. Several of them have now turned into guesthouses.

The most picturesque site of old windmills on Leros is the windmills in Pandeli, on the way to the castle. On the other hand, when being on the north side of the island, it is possible to see some modern windmills on top of the mountains. These modern windmills generate today electricity with the power of winds, which blow so often on the Greek islands.

Windmills of Leros

Τhere are six windmills at the top of the hill on the way up to the castle. These Mills were initially nine and they are dated back to the 17th century (the oldest) and up to the 19th century (the newest). The two of the three missing today were destroyed due to the construction of the peripheral road leading to the castle. The foundations of the third are still visible at the top of the hill, above the last mill.

The mill at the top serves as a living museum of an old mill. It has been restored exactly as it was in the old time, with a functional (still working) mechanism. The rest serve as exhibition spaces except the lower one that has been converted into a café with a magnificent view. The mills are the landmark of Leros and one of the most photographed spots on the island.
