The keel-billed toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus), also known as sulfur-breasted toucan, keel toucan, or rainbow-billed toucan, is a colorful Latin American member of the toucan family. It is the national bird of Belize. 

 

The species is found in tropical jungles from southern Mexico to Ecuador. It is an omnivorous forest bird that feeds on fruits, seeds, insects, invertebrates, lizards, snakes, and small birds and their eggs.

 

유황가슴큰부리새, 용골부리큰부리새 또는 무지개부리큰부리새로도 알려진 용골부리큰부리새(Ramphastossulfatus)는 큰부리새과에 속하는 다채로운 라틴 아메리카 동물입니다. 벨리즈의 국조(國鳥)이다.

 

이 종은 멕시코 남부에서 에콰도르에 이르는 열대 정글에서 발견됩니다. 과일, 씨앗, 곤충, 무척추동물, 도마뱀, 뱀, 작은 새와 그 알을 먹는 잡식성 숲새입니다.

It's also known fittingly as the rainbow-billed toucan, but this rainforest flyer's common name is the keel-billed toucan, probably because its big curving beak resembles the bladelike underside of a boat.

 

They might look a little clumsy, but these toucans wield their bills with skill. Social birds that love to compete as well as cooperate, they use their bills to toss fruit to feathered friends in an acrobatic game of catch, or to challenge the same compatriots in beak duels that resemble sword fighting.

 

There's no fear of broken noses here, though: Toucans' bills are made up of keratin, the same sturdy protein found in horse hooves, rhino horns, and your own fingernails.

 

무지개 부리 큰부리새라고도 알려져 있지만, 이 열대 우림 새의 일반적인 이름은 용골부리큰부리새입니다. 아마도 이 큰 구부러진 부리가 보트의 칼날 같은 밑면과 비슷하기 때문일 것입니다.

 

조금 서툴러 보일 수도 있지만, 이 큰부리새는 부리를 능숙하게 휘두릅니다. 경쟁과 협력을 좋아하는 사회성 있는 새들은 부리를 사용해 잡기 곡예게임에서 깃털 달린 친구들에게 과일을 던지거나 칼싸움과 유사한 부리 결투에서 같은 동료들에게 도전합니다.

 

하지만 여기서는 코가 부러질 염려가 없습니다. 큰부리새의 부리는 말발굽, 코뿔소 뿔, 사람 손톱에서 발견되는 것과 동일한 튼튼한 단백질인 케라틴으로 구성되어 있습니다.

 

왕부리새의 부리는 크지만, 무겁지 않다. 단단한 열매를 쪼아먹거나 나무 기둥에 구멍을 뚫어 둥지를 만들 때 유용하게 쓰인다. 또한 부리로 열을 발산하거나 억제하는 식으로 체온을 조절할 수 있다.

남쪽 하늘의 별자리. 위도상 한국에서는 볼 수 없다.

 

큰부리새자리는 두 명의 탐험가(Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser, Frederick de Houtman)에 의해 1595년 ~ 1597년 사이에 만들어져 1603년 요한 바이어의 《우라노메트리아》에 실린 12개 별자리 중 하나이다. 남반구의 자연물과 관련된 극락조자리, 카멜레온자리, 날치자리 등도 이때 만들어진 별자리이다.

딱히 밝은 별은 없는 어두운 별자리이나 우리 은하의 위성은하인 소마젤란 은하와 밝은 구상성단인 * 큰부리새자리 47(NGC 104)이 유명하다.

 

* 관측되는 구상성단중 오메가 센타우리에 이어 두번째로 밝은 구상성단이다.

또한 오메가 센타우리와 비슷하게 맨눈으로 볼수 있을정도로 밝아서 그런지 큰부리새자리 크사이(ξ Tuc)로 불린적이 있다.

 

 

큰부리새의 일종인 토코투칸(Toco Toucan, Ramphastos toco). '큰부리새'는 보통 큰부리새과(Ramphastidae)에 속하는 조류 일반을 가리킨다.
