HymnsAmazing Grace / 海莉「奇異恩典」

영국 성공회(Anglican) 사제 죤 뉴턴(John Newton ,1725–1807) 신부가  흑인 학대를 참회하면서  자신의 삶을 회고하며 작사한 찬송가로 1779년 출간되었다.

 

​한 때 길을  잃었으나 놀라운 은총이 나를 인도해 주었다는 가사가,  백인들에 위해 강제 이주와 학살의 비극을 겪은 인디언들에게 큰 위로와 힘이 되었다고 한다.

《미국찬송가사전》(Dictionary of American Hymnology)에 따르면, 어메이징 그레이스는 존 뉴턴의 자전적 삶을 가사화한 것이며, 작곡가는 이곡을 편곡한 E.OX.well 라고도 알려 졌다.. 아일랜드 혹은 스코트랜드의 민요에 붙여 불렸다거나 19세기 미국 남부에서 작곡되었다고 하는 등 여러 설이 존재한다.

 

죤 뉴턴은  영국 런던에서 상선을 탔었던 로마 가톨릭교회 신자인 아버지와 독실한 개신교 신자인 어머니에게서 1725년 태어났다. 모친은 그를 성직자로 키우려 했으나, 그가 겨우 6세였을 때 모친은 결핵으로 사망한다.  그 후 아버지가 바다에 가 있는 몇 년 동안은 사이가 좋지 못한 계모의 손에 자랐고, 부당한 대우를 받았던 선원 학교에 한동안 다니게 된다. 11살 때부터 존 뉴턴은 상선의 선원인 아버지를 따라 도제로 배를 탔으며, 여러 곳을 다녔다. 특히 그는 흑인노예를 수송하는 소위 노예무역에 종사했다.

 

당시 노예로 납치된 흑인은 가축 이하의 대우를 받았고, 수송선의 위생상태가 열악해 목적지에 도착하기 전에 간염, 탈수증, 영양실조 등으로 사망했다고 한다.

 

죤도 노예에 대한 이러한 대우를 당연하게 생각했지만, 1748년 5월 10일 그가 22세일 때 전기를 맞이한다. 선장이 된 그는 그의 배가 폭풍우를 만나 좌초될 위기 빠지게 된다. 이에 그는 하느님에게 기도를 드리게 된다. 모친이 독실한 그리스도 신자였어도,  마음에서 우러난 기도는 이때가 처음이라고 한다. 배는 기적적으로 폭풍우를 벗어났으며 무사히 귀선한다. 그는 이날을 제2의 탄생일로 아로새긴다. 그 후 6년간 노예무역업을 계속하지만, 노예의 처우를 비약적으로 개선했다고 한다.

 

1755년 죤 뉴턴은 병을 이유로 하선하였고, 면학에 매진해 성공회 사제가 된다. 1772년〈어메이징 그레이스)〉(amazing grace, 놀라운 자비)를 썼다.  이 곡은 흑인 노예무역에 관여한 것을 깊이 후회하고, 죄를 사하여 준 하느님의 은총에 감사하는 마음을 담고 있다. 이 곡 외에도 존 뉴턴 사제가 작사한 찬송가 몇 곡이 남아있다.

이 마음에 두려움을 알게 해주신 것 다름 아닌 은총이셨습니다. <* 'Twas는 it was의 축약형. 발음 /twɑz 혹은 twǝz/.>

 

 

And Grace, my fears relieved.

하오며 은총은 나의 두려움을 풀어주시기도 하셨습니다.

 

How precious did that Grace appear

은총이 정녕코 나타셨음은, 아, 이 얼마나 소중한가.

 

The hour I first believed.

아! 이 마음 처음으로 믿음을 깨달은 순간이여!

 

 

3 Through many dangers, toils and snares

헤아릴 수 없는 위험과 고생과 덫의 늪을 지나

 

I have already come;

이 몸 여기까지 이끌어주셨나이다.

 

'Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far <* 'Tis는 it is의 축약형. 발음 /tiz/.>

이 몸 안전하게 여기까지 인도하신 것 오직 은총이오니

은총은 이 몸 나의 본향에까지 이끌어주실 것이외다.

 

 

4 The Lord has promised good to me.

주님께서 저를 보호해주실 것을 약속하셨고

Hayley Dee Westenra (born 10 April 1987) is a New Zealand classical crossover singer and songwriter. Her first internationally released album, Pure, reached number one on the UK classical charts in 2003 and has sold more than two million copies worldwide. This is one of the fastest selling albums in her country's history.

Hayley was born in Christchurch, New Zealand. Her parents, Gerald and Jill Westenra, have two other children. Hayley's grandmother Shirley Ireland was a singer, and her grandfather was a pianist who also played the piano accordion. She has Irish, Dutch and English heritage.

 

Hayley는 뉴질랜드 크라이스트처치에서 태어났다. 그녀의 부모인 Gerald와 Jill Westenra에게는 다른 두 자녀가 있다. Hayley의 할머니 Shirley Ireland는 가수였고 그녀의 할아버지는 피아노 아코디언도 연주한 피아니스트였다. 그녀는 아일랜드, 네덜란드 및 영국 유산을 가지고 있다.

She began performing at age six in the Christmas play at her school, Fendalton Open Air School. After the show, a teacher said she was "pitch perfect" and encouraged Hayley to learn how to play a musical instrument; soon after she learned to read music and play the violin, piano, guitar, and recorder. She then began voice lessons and discovered a passion for musical theatre. By age 11, she had performed more than 40 times on stage, but was often given male parts. Westenra attended Cobham Intermediate School in 1998 and 1999, where a performing arts building was later named in her honour.

She is the daughter of New Zealanders Jill and Gerald Westenra.

At age 6, she starred as the lead role in her school's Christmas show called "The Littlest Star."

By age eleven, she had appeared in over 40 stage productions, sung on TV shows and performed in major concerts.

She has performed for Her Majesty the Queen of United Kingdom, President George W. Bush, Tony Blair, Prince Charles, Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell, Prince William and many others.

Over the course of her career, Hayley has performed with many different professionals, including: Celtic Woman, Andrea Bocelli, Faryl Smith, Alfie Boe, Bryn Terfel, Il Divo, Russell Watson, Sharon Corr, Natalie MacMaster, Johnathan Ansell, and Andre Rieu.

In 2004, she appeared on an episode of the Hit Televison Series "American Dreams".

In 2013, Westenra married French-born Arnaud Sabard, who worked as a sound engineer during her tours.
