This recording by W.C, Handy, 'Loveless Love', was originally released on the blue Varsity label in December, 1939. Uniquely, 'Loveless Love' features Handy on vocals as well as the cornet. On the original Varsity release, 'Loveless Love' was accompanied on the flip side with 'Way Down South Where The Blues Begin' - another W.C. Handy composition that featured his singing. However; on the flip side of this 1946 Davis release is his signature 1914 composition, 'St. Louis Blues', the featured A side. Handy published the song, 'Loveless Love', in 1921. It was first released by his good acquaintance, Noble Sissle, on the Pathé Actuelle label that same year. Handy re-worked and re-published the song in 1926 under the title 'Careless Love', which has become known as a popular blues standard. In 1946, Varsity made a deal with New Yorker, Joe Davis, and sold him the original masters to several recordings, including four W.C. Handy sides. Davis used the masters to re-release them on his own DAVIS label in 1946 as part of a 4-record disc collection titled, 'Rare Records Volume 1'. Being the original Varsity masters were used, the matrix numbers on the Davis pressings still exhibit the distinctive Varsity numbers near the label in the run-out groove. The 'Rare Records Volume 1' set included additional works Davis purchased from Varsity; Frankie Trumbauer's 'Stars And Stripes Forever' and 'Wearin' Of The Green Medley', Johnny McGee's 'Anitra's Dance' and 'In The Hall Of The Mountain King', and Tommy Tucker's 'Faithful To You' and 'I Love You, Oh How I Love You'. Although implied, a Volume 2 set was never released, nor were the remaining two W.C. Handy sides Davis purchased from Varsity. (Note: one of the remaining Varsity sides is uploaded to my YouTube channel at

In March, 1947, Joe Davis took a full page ad out in The Billboard, a weekly industry magazine, offering, as a single sale to record manufacturers, a large collection of original masters, including the sides released in the "Rare Records Volume 1' set. Davis had decided to focus on his Latin-American music publishing. There's very little documented history about the Davis 'Rare Records Volume 1' release , and a quest to find a surviving set will likely end in disappointment after an arduous journey. On occasion, a single 78 record from the four disc set can be located, and that was how I came to own this Rare Records gem. I recorded this video of my original pressing of this DAVIS 78 RPM record playing on my turntable to share the experience of playing 78s with those who also enjoy the hobby and history of vinyl records, especially early blues. I do not claim or own, nor imply ownership, of the song or music recording in any way.

 * Careless Love (1950년)

Love oh love oh careless love

Love oh love oh careless love

Love oh love oh careless love

Oh see what love has done to me

(Oh sorrow sorrow to my heart) to my heart

(When me and my true love have to part) we have to part

Oh mama mama don't you cry for I'll get another by and by

What oh what will mama say (what mama say)

When she learns I've done astray (I've done astray)

I love my mama and my papa too

I'd leave them both to go with you

Love oh love oh careless love

Love oh love oh careless love

Love oh love oh careless love

Oh see what love has done to me
