In the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games Nadia Comaneci became the first gymnast in Olympic history to be awarded the perfect score of 10.0 for her performance on the uneven bars.

Since 1896, athletics has been on the programme of each edition of the Games of the Olympiad. Its presence on the Games programme has allowed its popularity to increase across the world. This popularity was also strengthened by the creation of the IAAF in 1912. Women's events appeared for the first time at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, while the men's programme was standardised as of the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Although at the beginning women were authorised to participate in only some events, today their programme is almost identical to that of the men.

Nadia Elena Comฤƒneci Conner (née Comฤƒneci; born November 12, 1961) is a Romanian retired gymnast. She is a five-time Olympic gold medalist, all in individual events. In 1976, at the age of 14, Comฤƒneci was the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10.0 at the Olympic Games.  At the same Games (1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal), she received six more perfect 10s for events en route to winning three gold medals. At the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, she won two more gold medals and achieved two more perfect 10s. During her career, she won nine Olympic medals and four World Artistic Gymnastics Championship medals.

One of the world's best-known gymnasts, Comฤƒneci was praised for her artistry and grace, which brought unprecedented global popularity to the sport in the mid-1970s. Called "the most iconic gymnast of the 20th century" by El País, Comฤƒneci was named one of the Athletes of the 20th century by the Laureus World Sports Academy.

Comฤƒneci has lived in the United States since 1989, when she defected from then-Communist Romania, before its revolution in December that year. She later worked with and married American Olympic gold-medal gymnast Bart Conner — a wedding which was held in Bucharest after the fall of the Communist regime and televised live in Romania.

Early life

Nadia Elena Comฤƒneci was born on November 12, 1961, in Oneศ™ti, a small town in the Carpathian Mountains, in Bacฤƒu CountyRomania, in the historical region of Western Moldavia. She was born to Gheorghe (1936–2012) and ศ˜tefania Comฤƒneci, and has a younger brother. Her parents separated in the 1970s and her father later moved to Bucharest, the capital. She and her brother, Adrian, were raised in the Romanian Orthodox Church. In a 2011 interview, her mother said that she enrolled Comฤƒneci into gymnastics classes because, as a child, she was so full of energy and active that she was difficult to manage. After years of top-level athletic competition, Comฤƒneci graduated from Politehnica University of Bucharest with a degree in sports education, which qualified her to coach gymnastics.

Biography

Nadia Comaneci achieved perfection at the age of 14. The Romanian gymnast scored a “perfect 10” on the uneven bars in the team part of the gymnastics at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, and even the scoreboard didn’t know what to do: it wasn’t able to display the four digits needed to show a row of 10.00s, because nobody had even conceived that it was possible.

Once it was proved achievable, though, she couldn’t stop doing it: Comaneci got six more perfect tens as she swept to three gold medals (all around, uneven bars and balance beam) and international superstardom.

She didn’t let the fact that the only way is down from there to affect her, either. Blessed with exceptional skill, balance and a clean technique, she added two more gold medals to her Montreal one at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow (balance beam and floor), and won two World Championship golds (1978 in the balance beam and 1979 in the Team) and numerous European titles.

She was as innovative as she was technical, once in action. On the beam, she was the first gymnast to perform an aerial walkover and an aerial cartwheel-back handspring flight series. She also debuted the double twist dismount – and the double back salto on the floor. Her willingness to put creativity and ambition alongside technical excellence continues to influence the likes of Simone Biles.

In March of 1976, gymnasts Bart Conner and Nadia Comaneci found themselves at a familiar place: the winners podium. The two gold-medal athletes had just competed in an international competition known as the American Cup at Madison Square Garden, each taking home first place in the men’s and women’s all-around. But this particular win would mark a much more memorable moment for the future husband and wife.

Though Bart, of the United States, and Nadia, of Romania, had each been making a name for themselves in the sport, they hadn’t met before that fateful competition 40 years ago. The two open up about that first time they crossed paths during an interview for “Oprah: Where Are They Now?”

“I was 17, she was 14,” Bart says. “When the meet was over, we both won and held up these silver cups. The photographer said, ‘Oh, she’s adorable. Give her a kiss on the cheek. It’d make a nice picture.’”

So Bart did.

Via OWN

At the time, neither Bart nor Nadia thought much of the kiss. After all, there were other things to focus on.

Three months after that American Cup came the 1976 Summer Olympics. There, Nadia became gymnastics’ break-out star, scoring not just the sport’s first perfect-10 in the Olympics, but earning a total of seven perfect-10s by the end of the Games.

“[She] redefined our sport and became a global superstar,” Bart says.

Bart, meanwhile, didn’t have quite the same successes. “I took 46th place in the Olympics, so nobody knew me,” he smiles. “[Nadia] didn’t certainly pay attention to me!”

She returned to Romania to marry U.S. gymnast Bart Conner

However, the two did reconnect in 1990, and romance soon blossomed. Twenty years after their sweet kiss at the American Cup, the couple married in Nadia’s home of Bucharest, Romania.
