Ukraine opens up to making concessions

There are times when it is necessary to put the common good above personal pride, and that is exactly what Volodymyr Zelensky has done.

Official statement

The President of Ukraine, in an extensive statement via X, has taken a new step towards ending the war with Russia, and he has done so by accepting the conditions imposed by Donald Trump.

Direct nod to Trump

Following Zelensky and Trump's disastrous meeting at the White House, the American President ordered the withdrawal of military aid to Ukraine, and Zelensky's response has been immediate and direct. Zelensky has said he was ready to work under Trump's "strong leadership to get a peace that lasts".

Easing tensions

The Ukrainian president acknowledges that the meeting they held in the Oval Office "did not go the way it was supposed to be. It is regrettable that it happened this way."

Zelensky continued, "It is time to make things right. We would like future cooperation and communication to be constructive."

The goal is clear: to end the war

And after three years of war with Russia, Zelensky is clear that "None of us wants an endless war" and, therefore, "Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer."

Negotiation with many actors

A negotiating table that, obviously, would include Vladimir Putin and would involve, as seen, concessions to Russia and the United States that, in this case, Zelensky has already made it clear that he will grant without major problems.

Facilities for an agreement

Zelensky wrote: "Regarding the agreement on minerals and security, Ukraine is ready to sign it in any time and in any convenient format."

Lasting and sincere peace

An agreement that, according to Zelensky would be,  "a step toward greater security and solid security guarantees," hence he expressed his sincere wish that it will "work effectively."

All parties involved must concede

Indeed, the Ukrainian leader is clear that concessions must come from both sides, that is, from Ukraine but also from Russia.

For this reason, Zelensky affirms he is "ready to work fast to end the war," and he already has a roadmap whose initial stages are also listed in his statement.

Releases and bilateral truce

The first step would be "the release of prisoners and truce in the sky — ban on missiles, long-ranged drones, bombs on energy and other civilian infrastructure — and truce in the sea immediately, if Russia will do the same."

Proposal similar to the European one

Zelensky's proposal coincides, in many elements, with that proposed by the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer and the French President, Emmanuel Macron for the initial phase of the truce.

What does Trump say?

In a joint address to Congress on March 4, President Trump announced that he had received a significant letter from the Ukrainian leader committing to pursue a peace agreement under his guidance.

"I appreciate that he sent this letter"

Trump continued, "The letter reads Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer." The president then addressed Congress saying, "I appreciate that he sent this letter. Just got it a little while ago."

"Strong signals that they are ready for peace"

Trump told a packed House chamber that Moscow had also indicated that they were ready for peace saying,  "Simultaneously, we've had serious discussions with Russia and have received strong signals that they are ready for peace. Wouldn't that be beautiful?"
