The story of this song is tragic: In Siberia in 1852 they found a dead body of coachman who got frozen during a long road. There was a notebook with handwriting poems in his bag. Name of the author of the poems Иван Макаров (Ivan Makarov) was not known during his life time.

 

After a year since they were published the poems composer Александр Львович Гурилев (Alexander Gurilev) (1803 – 1858) wrote music for a poem what he liked the most. That was a start for the famous Russian romance “The Lonely Coach-Bell”.  In three years another Russian composer К. Сидорович (K. Sidorovich) wrote his version of music for the poem and this romance has got a long life and all people love!

"Siberia, year 1852. Dead frozen body of a coachman was found and in his bag a notebook full of handwritten poems.

 

Name of poet was Ivan Makarov, completely unknown at that time. One year later these poems were published and music composer Alexander Gurilev wrote music on the poem he liked most : The Lonely coach bell, nowadays erroneously named “ The monotous bell” “Little bell” or “ Monotonously rings a bell”. Maybe it is 'Monotonously Rings the Little Bell.' I think in Russian it is 'Adnazvutshno Gremit Kalakoltshik.' Singer is Vladimir Albatayev, born in the Republic of Buryatia, in Siberia. Russia.

 

 

The soloist is Vladimir Albatayev. He was born and spent his childhood and youth in Buryatia. Since his early days he enjoyed music greatly and felt it to be his vocation to become a professional singer. After school and two-year army service  he first studied in Tchaikovsky music college in Ulan Ude and then in Moscow in the Gnesins Academy.

The lead singer Vladimir Albatayev is of Buryat (one of the nationalities in Russian Syberia).

 

In 1994 he participated in the contest of chamber vocalists in Kaliningrad "Amber Nightingale" and became its prize-winner. In January 2002 he was awarded the title Honoured Artist of Russia and in December 2003 got the title Honoured Artist of Buryat Republic. Since 1992 he have been singing as a soloist with The Capella Moscow Kremlin, but also collaborated with different ensembles. He was on tour in the USA, Japan, Australia, Canada, and Europe. Nowadays he sing with the ZLATOUST ensemble.

and the dust on the way is stirred up a bit,

and sadly over the plain field

flows the song of my coachman.

There was so much feeling in this song,

so much feeling in the familiar tune,

that in my cool breast

my heart inflamed. 

 

And I recall other nights,

and the fields, and the woods of my home, and into my eyes which had been dry so long

a tear arose as a spark.

 

Monotonously the little bell is sounding, slightly echoing from afar,

and my coachman fell silent, but the way

in front of me is still so long, so long.
