예수는 BC 7~6년경에  베들레헴 혹은 나자렛에서 태어난 것으로 추정된다.

예수  탄생에 대해서는 동정녀 마리아에게서 태어났다는 설이 유력한데, 예수는 육적인 아버지가 없고 성령의 능력으로 마리아가 잉태했다는 것이 정통 그리스도교의 근본 교리이다.

 

로마 역서에 따르면 그리스도교의 크리스마스 축제는 336년경 로마에서 거행되었다고 한다.

4세기에 동방교회 대부분이 12월 25일에 그리스도의 탄생을 기념하기 시작하여.........

 

 

'크리스마스'라는 말은

'크라이스트(Christ, '메시아'라는 뜻)'와 '마스(mass, '미사'라는 뜻)'가 결합되어 만들어진 말로, 크라이스트의 탄생을 축하하고 예배하는 날이라는 의미이다.

 

한국어로는 성탄절(聖誕節),

일본 クリスマス(쿠리스마스) , ノエル (노에루)  

중국  圣诞节 [Shèngdàn Jié] ; 솅단 지에 ( 크리스마스 , 성탄절)

프랑스어로는 노엘(Noel),  독일어로는 바이나흐텐(Weihnachten)이라고 한다.
