"Rivers of Babylon" is a Rastafari song written and recorded by Brent Dowe and Trevor McNaughton of the Jamaican reggae group The Melodians in 1970. The lyrics are adapted from the texts of Psalms 19, and 137 in the Hebrew Bible. The Melodians' original version of the song appeared on the soundtrack album for the 1972 movie The Harder They Come, which made it internationally known.

 

"Rivers of Babylon"은 1970년 자메이카 레게 그룹 The Melodians의 Brent Dowe와 Trevor McNaughton이 작곡하고 녹음한 Rastafari 노래이다.

 

가사는 히브리어 성경의 시편 19편과 137편의 본문을 각색한 것이다. The Melodians의 원래 버전의 노래는 1972년 영화 "The Harder They Come(어려우면 어려울 수록)"의 사운드트랙 앨범에 수록되어 국제적으로 알려지게 되었다.

 

*라스타파리 운동(Rastafari movement)

1930년대 자메이카에서 일어난 운동으로 독자적인 성서 해석을 바탕으로 아프리카계 이주민의 노예 상태로부터의 해방을 추구하였다.

라스타파리는 에티오피아 황제 하일레 셀라시에 1세(Haile Selassie I,Ras Tafari)를 신격화하였고 그의 통치 기간에 예언이 성취될 것이라고 믿고 아프리카로의 이주를 희망하였다. <에티오피아주의(Ethiopianism) >

"Rivers of Babylon" was covered in 1978 by Germany-based disco band Boney M., with a version that was released as a single. Boney M.'s release stayed at the no. 1 position in the UK for five weeks and was also the group's only significant US chart entry, peaking at no. 30 in the Pop charts. Boney M.'s version of the song remains one of the top ten all-time best-selling singles in the UK, where it is one of only seven songs to have sold over 2 million copies
