Francois Peron National Park, Western Australia

Located on the Coral Coast, Francois Peron National Park sits within the Shark Bay World Heritage Area and is a study in contrasts; rich-red cliffs and desert sands give way to powdersoft white-sand beaches that melt into startlingly blue ocean waters, creating an arresting natural triptych. Covering 52,000 hectares on the Peron Peninsula, known as Wulyibidi to the local Malgana Aboriginal people, the park encompasses arid shrub lands and sun-bleached sand plains, but the watery wonderland at its edge is the real drawcard.

There is also an eponymous locality of the Shire of Shark Bay, but the boundaries of the national park and the locality are not identical.

Next to the open waters of Shark Bay, green streams and blue lagoons ripple amid deep red dunes in Francois Peron National Park, one of several protected areas upon the bay. In the tinted bedrock below the dunes, cut-out cave shelters offer proof of Aboriginal peoples' long history fishing and shellfishing the rich bay (known in the Malgana tongue as Gutharraguda, or 'two waters'). Just offshore, something even older sways in the waves: The bay's seagrass fields are one huge clonal plant, sprouted millennia ago from a single seed and now considered the largest organism on Earth.
