This song is written by a swedish pastor in a little village in Småland.

Carl Gustav Boberg wrote the poem "O Store Gud" (O Great God) in 1885 with nine verses.

 

이 노래는 Småland의 작은 마을에 있는 스웨덴 목사의  작품이다.

곡은 스웨덴 민요이며   E.A.Edgren이 편곡했다.

Carl Gustav Boberg는 1885년에 "O Store Gud"(O Great God오 위대한 신)라는 시를 9개의 시로 썼다.

 

"How Great Thou Art" is a Christian hymn based on a Swedish traditional melody and a poem written by Carl Boberg (1859–1940) in Mönsterås, Sweden, in 1885. It was translated into German and then into Russian.
It was translated into English from the Russian by English missionary Stuart K. Hine, who also added two original verses of his own. It was popularised by George Beverly Shea and Cliff Barrows during the Billy Graham crusades.

"How Great Thou Art"는 1885년 스웨덴 Mönsterås에서 칼 보베르그( Carl Boberg,1859–1940)가 쓴 스웨덴 전통 선율과 시를 기반으로 한 기독교 찬송가이다. 독일어로 번역된 후 러시아어로 번역되었다. 영국 선교사 Stuart K. Hine이 러시아어에서 영어로 번역했으며, 그는 또한 자신의 원본 두 개 구절을 추가했다. 그것은 Billy Graham 십자군 운동 기간  George Beverly Shea와 Cliff Barrows에 의해 대중화되었다.

Stuart K. Hine was a Bristish Methodist missionary on a mission trip in Ukraine in 1931. Stuart Hine and his family left Ukraine as famine and World War Two began.
Stuart K. Hine는 영국 감리교 선교사로 1931년 우크라이나로 선교길에 올랐다.(1931-32년간 우크라이나에서는 스탈린 정권에 의한 대기근학살<홀로도모르> 사건 발생) . 그와 그의 가족은 기근과 2차 세계대전이 발발함에 우크라이나를 떠났다.

The final English version of "How Great Thou Art" was published in 1949 and quickly spread among Britian, Africa, India and America.
1949년 "How Great Thou Art"의  마지막 영어 버젼이 출판되자 영국, 아프리카, 인디아 그리고 아메리카로 급속히 퍼져나갔다.

It was voted the United Kingdom's favourite hymn by BBC's Songs of Praise. "How Great Thou Art" was ranked second (after "Amazing Grace") on a list of the favourite hymns of all time in a survey by Christianity Today magazine in 2001.
BBC의 찬송가(Songs of Praise)에 의해  영국에서 가장 좋아하는 찬송가로 선정되었다. "How Great Thou Art"는 2001년 크리스찬 투데이 잡지의 설문 조사에서 가장 좋아하는 찬송가 목록에서 "Amazing Grace"에 이어 2위를 차지했다.

Carl Gustav Boberg (16 August 1859 – 7 January 1940) was a Swedish poet and elected official, best known for writing the Swedish language poem of "O Store Gud" (O great God) from which the English language hymn"How Great Thou Art" is derived.

칼 구스타프 보베르그(Carl Gustav Boberg, 1859년 8월 16일 – 1940년 1월 7일)는 스웨덴 시인이자 선출직 공무원으로 스웨덴어로 된 시 "O Store Gud"(오 위대한 신)를 쓴 것으로 가장 잘 알려져 있다.

"O Store Gud" (O great God,오 위대한 신) 으로부터 "How Great Thou Art"가 파생되었다.

' How Great Thou Art '

1885년 칼 보버그(C.G, Boberg, 1859~1940)가 스웨덴의 서남해안을 여행하던 중  종교적인 영감을 받아 지은 시를 가사로 했다.

그는 여행 중에 대낮에 갑자기 천둥번개와 비바람을 만나서 잠시 심한 공포에 사로잡히는데, 잠시후 맑아져서 다시 눈부신 햇빛이 나오고 숲에서는 새들의 노래 소리가 들려온다.

그는 즉시 그 자리에서 무릎 꿇고 전능하신 하나님께 겸허한 기도를 드렸고, 나중에 그 기억을 되살려 9편의 시를 쓴다.

몇 년 후 그는 어느 교회 집회에서 그의 시가 스웨덴의 민요 선율에  붙여져 불리는 노래를 듣는다.
