Dame Vera Lynn, Britain's World War Two 'Forces' Sweetheart,' Dies at 103

prime minister Harold Wilson later remarked

 that it wasn't Winston Churchill who won the war

but the voice of Vera Lynn.

If any one person, apart from Winston Churchill, could be said to symbolize the Second World War for Britain, it was Vera Lynn.

Churchill with his speeches rallied the nation’s fighting spirit; Vera with her songs touched its heart.

Born Vera Welch on March 20, 1917 into a working-class London family—her father was a plumber and her mother a dressmaker—she demonstrated a love and talent for music at an early age. Her singing career took off in the 1930s, during an era when London and other British cities hopped to the tune of great dance bands that performed live and were broadcast over the radio from grand hotels. In 1938 the singer—who had by now taken on her maternal grandmother’s last name and become Vera Lynn—joined bandleader Bert Ambrose’s orchestra, and in the following year she performed one of her trademark songs, We’ll Meet Again, For the First Time.

 

1917년 3월 20일 런던의 노동계급 가정에서 태어난 Vera Welch,  그녀의 아버지는 배관공이었고 어머니는 재봉사였다. 그녀는 어린 나이에 음악에 대한 사랑과 재능을 보여주었다. 그녀의 노래 경력은 1930년대 런던과 다른 영국 도시들이 라이브 공연을 하고 그랜드 호텔에서 라디오를 통해 방송되는 훌륭한 댄스 밴드의 곡에 뛰어들던 시대에 시작되었다. 1938년 외할머니의 이름을 따서 Vera Lynn이 된 이 가수는 밴드 리더 Bert Ambrose의 오케스트라에 합류했고 이듬해 그녀의 트레이드마크인 We'll Meet Again, 처음 노래했다. .

 

 

Dame Vera Margaret Lynn CH DBE OStJ (née Welch; 20 March 1917 – 18 June 2020) was an English singer and entertainer whose musical recordings and performances were very popular during World War II. She is honorifically known as the "Forces' Sweetheart", having given outdoor concerts for the troops in Egypt, India and Burma during the war as part of the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA). The songs most associated with her include "We'll Meet Again",  "(There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover", "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" and "There'll Always Be an England".

 

 2차 세계대전 당시 영국 군 장병들과 국민의 사랑을 한 몸에 받았던 영국의 여성 가수 베라 린이 2020년 6월 18일(현지시간) 별세했다고 BBC 방송 등 영국 언론들이 보도했다. 향년 103세.

 

베라 린은 제2차 세계대전 기간에  '위윌 밑 어겐'(We'll Meet Again),  '더 화이트 클리프스 오브 도버'(There'll Be Bluebirds Over)The White Cliffs of Dover  등의 히트곡으로 사랑을 받았다.

 

2차대전 중이던 1941년에는 '친애하는 당신들에게'(Sincerely Yours)라는 제목의 주간 라디오 방송을 시작해 전장 각지에서 싸우던 장병들과 나치의 폭격에 시달리던 영국 국민들을 위로했다.

 

영국의 전차부대 장병들은 탱크에 '베라'라는 이름을 적은 채 전투에 나설 만큼 베라는 군인들에게 스타 중의 스타였다.

 

린은 이후에도 이집트, 인도, 미얀마(옛 버마) 등 영국 군대가 주둔한 곳이라면 어느 곳도 마다하지 않고 순회공연을 다니며 지친 장병들을 감미롭고 선명한 목소리로 위로했다.

 

그래서 린에게는 '군인들의 연인'(The Forces' Sweetheart)이라는 별명이 붙었다.

I feel very honoured that people regard me in this way.”
